T-Tops
A T-top is a type of boat top for center console boats. This boat top is built "T" shaped structure when viewed from the side. You can stand under it, because it is tall enough also providing shade and protection from the rain. The T-Top is different from other boat tops because the structure is attached to the center console area. It doesnÕt have support brackets or straps connected to the outside of the boat. For this reason it provides a 360-degree access around the boat. This allows you to have a full walk-around access to all open areas of the boat.
T-tops are available in either fiberglass or canvas. There are many manufacturers who will custom design a T-top especially for your boating needs. In the market there are T-tops with rod holders, antenna mounts, radar arches, electrical boxes and other accessories.
Sunbrella marine canvas is used in making most canvas T-tops. This material provides maximum durability, UV resistance and it is waterproof. Some T-tops are made of fiberglass, however this material is more expensive but it is rigid and more durable. Many professionals recommend looking for marine-grade schedule 40 anodized aluminum frames, at least 1 _Ó in diameter. When buying your boat top, ask for any additional accessories you may need.
A ready made boat top is usually cheaper than a custom made boat top. Ready made T-tops have a lower cost; however they might not fit your boat as a custom T-top. A professional boat top manufacturer would measure your boat precisely and do any custom welding or frame bending required to install the T-top on your boat.
A boat top also needs a cover. When buying a cover for your T-Top, it is a good idea to look for extra canvas that would reinforce the areas were the T-top frame comes into direct contact with the canvas. Use the same criteria that you would use when buying a cover for your boat. If you buy a good quality cover, the boat top will last longer.
