Dock and Docking Lights

DOCK LIGHT SYSTEMS
Something you definitely need on a dock is a dock light. A dock light can be either solar powered or electrical powered.
Dock lights are essential on a dock since they are the most important source of light for boats trying to find their way back in a safe way. It is easier to bring in a boat during the evening hours or in adverse weather conditions when you have very bright dock lights.
A dock light is essential for the security of the boat and its passengers. Choosing the best dock light system will prevent docking problems and the dock will be able to function and accommodate boats properly.
The length of your deck will determine the number of lights that you should have on the deck. It is a good idea to place a dock light every six feet on both sides of the dock. The dock lights can be attached to a post or to the deck itself.
It is a good idea to avoid installing tall bright lights. Many professionals recommend a dock light type called bollard. A bollard light is a type of architectural outdoor lighting that is a short, upright ground-mounted unit. Bollards are mounted about 24 to 35 inches above the ground. This dock light type shines below the cabin level of most large house boats. It is a good idea to install them because due to the way they are designed, they can prevent collisions between boats and with the dock itself.
It is also important to install a solar powered dock light system. It is superior to other choices, as it is safer and cheaper to operate. Solar powered dock lights collect solar energy during the day. The solar panels are usually positioned on top of the dock light. The energy collected is used to recharge a battery that is located inside the dock light and then this battery powers a led light. Solar powered dock lights can automatically turn on when the sun goes down and turn off after sunrise, a feature that makes them safer than other dock light types. Solar lights are not only energy efficient but environmentally friendly as well.
The most common materials used for dock lights are copper, bronze, aluminum and brass. They are all very durable. Solar powered dock light systems are also easy to install and they have a very low maintenance cost. If your dock light is made from the above mentioned materials, then you can expect them to last for a very long period of time. If your dock is in the shade most of the day, it is a good idea to choose and install a solar lighting system that is charged and operated by a single large solar panel. This panel can be set up in a sun-filled spot near the dock.
Before installing your dock light system, it is important to talk to your marina manager or to your neighbors. There are some regulations regarding the lighting of docks. A dock cannot have the light configuration that could mistake it for a boat, so be sure to check the local regulations. It is also important to choose a dock light system that helps you identify your dock. You need to be able to steer your boat to the correct side at night, for this reason it is a good idea to set up a specific grouping of lights at the end of the dock. You can also add a set of lights that shine into the water and reflect off the edges of the dock. Place a tall light that directs its light downward at the entrance to your path or stairway up from the dock.
The type of dock light that you will purchase will depend on your choice and spending budget. However, always do some thorough research before deciding which one you will buy.
