Water Filtration-Why is it important?

What is water purification, and why is it so important to us? Water purification is a process where unwanted biological contaminants, materials, and chemicals are removed from the water. It is especially important to use some kind of a water purification process to clean water that you are going to drink because the harmful pathogens found in unclean water can make a person very ill. The objective of water purification is to generate water for a specific function, whether that is for drinking, or other purposes. 

Water purification techniques have very many applications other than simply for drinking purposes. Other water purification procedures may be applied to certain medical requirements, chemical and industrial applications, and even pharmacology. 

There are many different types of water purification techniques. Some of the more general water purification techniques include physical processes such as water filtration, and sedimentation, and biological processes such as slow sand filters or activated sludge. Other water purification processes are done using chemical processes such as flocculation and chlorination and the use of electromagnetic radiation such as ultraviolet light. All of the above water purification processes have been proven to be both effective and noteworthy.

The main rationale behind using one of the bove water purification processes is that they either reduce or eliminate the concentration of any amount of particularly harmful material. Types of harmful material found in hydration sources making water purification absolutely necessary include parasites, bacteria, algae, viruses, fungi, and suspended particles. These microscopic materials have proven themselves to be responsible for many diseases.  Water can contract these harmful particles from fallen rain that has come in contact with surfaces containing traces of it. If you are the least bit unsure of the water quality from any source, the correct water purification technique is a sure way to decontaminate your drinking water and affirm your confidence in the cleanness of your water.

Water purification standards for drinking water quality are usually set by the government in that area or internationally. These water purification standards set controls for minimum and maximum allowed concentrations of impurities based on what the water is used for.  All standards set is for the protection of health to all who drink the concerning water. 

There is no way to approximate water purification standards by simply visually examining the water. Chemical tests are needed. Simpler water purification procedures such as boiling or using some kind of activated carbon filter are not adequate for decontaminating all possible pathogens that may exist in the water. During the 1800’s, natural spring water was considered to be clean and safe for all purposes. Today it must be tested before deciding the type of water purification process necessary for the job. The only way to determine the necessary water purification process is to use a chemical analysis. Using the chemical analysis method is expensive but is imperative in order to select the correct water purification method.

Although water purification is known worldwide to be essential to good health, many people do not have access to it. According to a 2007 World Health Organization report, 1.1 billion people lack access to an improved, drinking water purification supply, and 88 percent of the 4 billion cases of diarrhea are attributed to lack of water purification and desensitization practices each year. The WHO estimates that 94 percent of these cases can be avoided through environmental alterations, including access to clean water provided by water purification treatments. 

There are many at home water purification techniques that would significantly improve health and save a huge number of lives each year if practiced regularly. Simple at home water purification techniques such as chlorination, filters, and solar sterilization would significantly improve these unsafe water conditions. Another simple water purification technique is to store water in a safe, sealed container.

Whatever water purification technique you choose to make use of, make sure you continue to practice it regularly. Never put your well being in second place, leaving you unhealthy and incapable of keeping up with the everyday activities of life.
