Getting the most out of your Garmin GPS system

A Garmin Global Positioning System or GPS is a fantastic device that you can use in a number of ways, and the latest models offer all the tools that you need to find out where you are anywhere in the world.  From simple tracking of position through to accurately measuring your speed at sea, a GPS is a very handy tool to have with you whatever activity you are engaged in at the time.

The basic function of a Garmin GPS is to provide instant information about your position and it does this by tracking the signals of a number of satellites in a global network in order to calculate where you are in the world.  By knowing where you are, you can then translate this information onto a map or chart, and use it in planning your route.

Many Garmin GPS systems – particularly the more advanced models come with integrated maps, although these are not always all that easy to read on the small screen, and most users will ideally prefer to use the GPS in conjunction with a full chart – particularly at sea.  Having said that, if you are traveling on land, and using your GPS in the car to plan your journey, the small screen is perfectly adequate for most needs.

You can now combine your Gamin GPS with local radio news and traffic information to make journeys by road more straightforward than ever.  By uploading the appropriate route planning software to your system, your Garmin GPS can provide you with ad hoc route changes to help you to avoid traffic problems and always use the most efficient route to get you to your final destination as quickly as possible.

There are a number of alternatives for using your Garmin GPS as a route planner in the car, and the various pieces of software all provide similar functionality.

In terms of a straight replacement for a traditional paper road map, a Garmin GPS offers vast capability to users, and it is in the extended functions such as route planning, and traffic avoidance where it really stands out, but simply having a sat nav system giving you indications of where you are going, and which route to follow is a sure fire way of getting to your destination much more efficiently than ever before.

Where a GPS satellite navigation system really comes into its own is when you get off the beaten track.  With no local landmarks to guide you, and a lack of road signs on hand to point you in the right direction, the ability of a GPS system to show you where you are in relation to your surroundings is absolutely priceless, and will always come in handy for you when you are trying to find your way through the wilderness.

Of course, the original purpose of GPS was in order to coordinate the military to ensure that they would be able to act as one under any circumstances.  If you are traveling with a group of people, all having GPS Systems means that even if one person were to contrive to get themselves lost and separated from the rest of the group, they will be able to easily get back on track, and even give an accurate prediction of their arrival time back with the rest of the group.

While many road purists believe that systems like the Garmin GPS have taken away the chance of discovering new sights along the way to your final destination, and created a ruthlessly efficient means of getting from A to B, with no possibility of a detour this is not the case, and all you need to do is switch your tracking off if you want to lose yourself for a while, before switching it back on again in order to get back to where you were originally heading.

Whether you simply want a satellite navigation system in your car in order to help you to avoid the traffic on your way to the supermarket, or need your Garmin GPS for long distance sailing trips and to find your way across the ocean, it will soon become an integral part of your lifestyle, always there to point you in the right direction, and provide you with all the information you need to find your way, wherever you want to go.
